Spring Film Festivals

GFT 2

Spring has not quite sprung; we’ve seen more snow than snowdrops, but never fear the GFT is here with two festivals to brighten up your April.

The Czech Cinema UK Tour returns to the Glasgow Film Theatre for its fourth annual showing, Made in Prague, from April 2 to 30.

Highlights include rotoscoped animation, Alois Nebel, Nikolaev’s WWII film, Lidice, and crime noir Walking Too Fast.

Then skipping across Europe the GFT will host an Italian Film Festival, from April 12 – 20.

Curated by Allan Hunter and Richard Mowe, it features old and new Italian cinema, with guest speakers to introduce niche films.

Among the speakers will be Brenda Anderson, Group Leader for the Slow Food West Scotland movement, offering insight into Stefano Sardo’s documentary,  Slow Food Story, on April 15.

Also billed is Dr Pasquale Iannone, Edinburgh University film studies fellow, who will introduce The War of the Volcanoes, a documentary about Ingrid Berman and Rossellini’s affair, showing April 17.

As if the festival events aren’t exclusive enough, the GFT is previewing Pedro Almodóvar’s latest feature, I’m So Excited, ending in a live satellite interview with director, on April 23.

GFT spokeswoman, Jane Hartshorn, said: “As well as offering the most exciting new releases GFT will host the Italian Film Festival and the Made in Prague: New Czech Cinema UK Tour, both of which showcase the best films to emerge from each country in recent years.

“So why not cast away the cobwebs of winter with GFT’s April programme?”
